Dr. George Cowan, 89, of St. Louis Park, Minn., formerly of Duluth, died Monday, April 26, 1999.

He was a graduate of Duluth Central High School and University of Minnesota Medical School.

He was a member of Temple Israel, A.M.A. and the Minnesota Medical Association; past president of Lake Superior Medical Society, Masons Ionic Lodge, Scottish Rite Bodies, the Shriners and Lions Club; a board member of the Boys and Girls Club; chief of staff at the former St. Mary's Medical Center and chief of psychiatry at St. Mary's, St. Luke's Hospital and Miller-Dwan Medical Center. He was a charter member of the Duluth Symphony Orchestra.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Esther Cowan; and a son, Dr. Gary Cowan.

He is survived by his wife, Anita Garber Cowan; a son, Mark (Laura) Cowan; a stepdaughter Cynthia Gordon; a stepson, Neil Davis; a daughter-in-law, Ursela Cowan; grandchildren Carla, Ellie, Mattie and Travis Cowan and Debbie Gordon and Nick Gordon; and a brother, Edward Cohen.

Service: 3 p.m. today in Hodroff & Sons Funeral Chapel, 126 E. Franklin Ave., Minneapolis. Interment service 1 p.m. Wednesday in Park Hill Cemetery, Duluth. Memorials preferred to Dr. George and Anita Cowan Scholarship Fund, in care of Minnesota Medical Foundation, Box 193, Mayo, 420 Delaware St., S.E. Minneapolis, MN 55455.
